What’s Irving Serving?
So, you’ve been told you’ve got “the look,” your selfies are fire, and maybe you’ve even dabbled in a few local shoots. Now you’re thinking, “Should I get a modeling agent?” Or better yet, “How do I even find one?”
Breathe. You’re not late. You’re not lost. You’re just here at the next step-and I’m serving up the guidance you didn’t know you needed.
First Off… What Is a Modeling Agent?
Think of a modeling agent as your career’s co-pilot. They’re the person who helps connect you (the talent) with the people who are booking job-brands, casting directors, photographers, stylists, and all the other behind-the-scenes magic-makers.
Listen up kidz they’re not there to babysit or wave a magic wand that lands you on the cover of Vogue (although wouldn’t that be nice?). They are there to open doors, negotiate contracts, and help guide your career with some good ol’ fashioned industry know-how.
Here’s the quick-hit version of what they do:
They help you find work (by pitching you to the right clients)
Negotiate your rates (so you’re not paid in “exposure”)
Advise you on your brand and career path
Keep your schedule and bookings organized
Protect your interests (legally and professionally)
Cool… But Do I Need One?
Not everyone needs an agent right away, but if you’re serious about modeling as more than just a hobby, an agent makes a big difference. You can absolutely get started on your own, but there are limits to how far you can go solo-especially when it comes to higher-paying commercial work or working with national and global brands.
Bottom line: If you’re looking to grow, level up, and get paid professionally, a legit agent is a major asset.
So, How Do I Get a Modeling Agent?
Glad you asked. Here’s the game plan-with zero fluff and a touch of fun:
1. Do Your Homework
Research agencies in your city (or nearby markets). Start with the reputable ones. Check their websites, see who they represent, and look for clear submission instructions. If the site looks like it was made in 1999 and says, “Modeling is easy money!”… move along.
2. Get Clean, Natural Photos
Most agencies want to see:
A headshot (no makeup or very minimal)
A full body shot (simple, fitted clothing)
A smiling shot
A profile (side) shot
Your Look 1 from your shoot
These are usually called digitals or polaroids. Natural lighting, plain background, and your authentic self. No filters, no heavy edits.
3. Submit Online (or Attend an Open Call)
Most agencies have an online submission form. Follow the instructions exactly. Some also host open calls where you can show up in person. If you go: dress simply, be confident, and bring your digitals printed or ready to show.
4. Be Patient… But Proactive
Some agencies take time to respond-or might not respond at all. That’s okay. It’s not a rejection of you-it’s a business decision. Keep submitting to other agencies. Keep working on your portfolio. Keep showing up.
Remember: not every agency is the right fit for every model, and that’s a good thing.
5. Watch Out for Scams
If someone asks you for money upfront to sign you, run. Real agencies make money when you do. They might suggest a specific photographer or recommend classes, but you should never feel pressured to pay thousands before booking a single job.
If it smells shady? It probably is.
A Few Extra Tips from Your Favorite Mentor:
Show up on time. Be respectful. Stay professional. These three things will take you far-even further than cheekbones, sometimes.
Know your brand. Are you more commercial? Editorial? Fitness? Kidswear? Understanding your lane helps agents place you in the right spaces.
Keep learning. Modeling isn’t just standing still and looking pretty-it’s posing, moving, emoting, and adapting. Study. Practice. Grow.
In Summary:
A modeling agent is a key player in your career-but they’re not here to do the work for you. They’re here to do the work with you.
You bring the talent, drive, and professionalism.
They bring the connections, experience, and business savvy.
Together? You build something bigger than just “taking cute photos.”
So, if you’re ready to level up, get your digitals & your portfolio done, do your research, and take that next step. The right agent is out there-and they just might be looking for someone exactly like you.
Until next time,
That’s what Irving’s serving.
