Season vs. Reasons: “Men vs. Women: The Shoe Shopping Smackdown”

What’s Irving Serving?

Hello, my fabulous fashion-forward friends (and you sensible shoe skeptics lurking in the back)!

Let’s talk shoes. One of my favorite subjects…Not just the soles on your feet, but the soul of your style—those leather-clad, rubber-bottomed, lace-up or slip-on statements we make every single day.

Now, everyone buys shoes. But why do we buy them? Ok kidz, that’s where it gets juicy.

Let me break it down for you: some people buy shoes based on the season (functional folk, I see you), while others buy shoes for reasons (hello, emotional shoppers and outfit completers!). (That’s Me). And of course, there’s a little twist depending on whether we’re talking about the gents or the gals.

So grab your latte (or your whiskey), and let’s walk through this— Mentor style.

Season: The Practical Approach

You know the type. The “I need boots because it’s snowing” kind of logic. These are the people who check the weather app before they check the mirror.

Men’s Seasonal Shoe Buying:

Men—bless your practical hearts—tend to shop with the seasons in mind. Winter? Time for those rugged Timberlands. Summer? Bust out the slides and boat shoes. Fall? Hello, suede Chelsea boots.

It’s not about fashion (although we wish it were); it’s about function. Dry feet. Comfortable arches. Something that matches two pairs of pants and doesn’t require thought. Efficient? Yes. Exciting? Meh.

Women’s Seasonal Shoe Buying:

Now, ladies can be seasonal too—but with flair. Winter? Thigh-high boots because they’re sexy and warm. Summer? Espadrilles, sandals, wedges… because “it’s hot out” is just another excuse to rotate the wardrobe.

It’s still practical… but never boring.

Reasons: The Emotional (and Stylish) Approach

This is where it gets fun. “I saw them on sale.” “They match my vibe.” “I just had a bad day.” “These shoes are me in leather form.” Baby, that’s a reason.

Men’s Reason-Based Buying:

Now, some of you evolved men (snaps) do buy for reasons. Me Me Me… Maybe it’s to impress a date. Maybe it’s because your favorite sneaker just dropped. Maybe you want that new promotion look. You’re learning—slowly—that shoes are part of your brand.

But let’s be real: your “reasons” are often still rooted in logic. You’ll splurge on sneakers because they’re “collectible,” or boots because they’re “investment pieces.” Okay, Gordon Gekko. Or you may be a Shoeaholic… (WINK*).

Women’s Reason-Based Buying:

Ladies, this is your playground. You buy shoes because you can. Shoes are therapy. They’re a reward. They’re part of a larger vision. And yes, sometimes they’re bought with tears in your eyes and a cocktail in your hand (no judgment, we’ve all been there). Boots, Slingbacks, Flats, Platforms, Wedges, Slides, Mules, Kitten Heels, Stilettos… Phew!

You don’t need a season when you’ve got a reason, and that’s the power move.

Gender & Shoe Culture: Let’s Not Get It Twisted

We live in a world where the lines between men’s and women’s fashion are (thankfully) blurring. But there are still cultural cues that influence how each gender shops. Men are taught to prioritize practicality. Women are marketed aspiration. And we all need to call B.S. on both sometimes.

Want to buy those white boots in July? Do it.
Want to rock dress sneakers just because it’s Monday? Go off, king.

Final Word from Your Favorite Mentor:

Shoes are more than footwear—they’re foot-forward declarations. Whether you’re buying by season or by reason, just make sure you’re buying for YOU.

So next time you see that perfect pair? Don’t ask “Do I need these?”
Ask: “What season am I in—and what reason do I need to step into it boldly?” And if they come in two colors… Buy Both you won’t regret it!
