What is “Slating”?

“Slating” is the industry term for introducing yourself in an audition, whether it’s in-person, virtual, or self-taped. When you are going out for a modeling job,  acting job, or voice over slating is something that you would be submitting to get the job.  While it may seem like a small step, slating sets the tone for your audition and allows those watching to get a sense of your personality and professionalism.

1. It’s All About Confidence!

When slating, confidence is key. Do Your best to stand tall, smile naturally, and look directly into the camera. You want to come across as comfortable and professional right from the start. Remember, your slate is the first thing casting directors & modeling agencies will see, so it’s important to project a positive and engaging energy. You can use your phone to take this if you dont have a camera

2. Who Are You? Introduce Yourself:

A standard slate for modeling auditions usually includes your name and agency. If you’re not signed with an agency yet, just introduce yourself. For example, say:
– “Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I’m represented by [Agency Name].”
– If you’re not with an agency, simply say, “Hi, my name is [Your Name].” Keep it Upbeat and fun, give them lots of energy this is key.

Some casting directors may also request additional information such as your height, age, or location, so be prepared to include those details if asked.

3. Right Side Left Side Present Your Profiles

After introducing yourself, casting directors may ask for a quick profile or body shot. Turn to your left and right to show your side profiles, and then return to face the camera. This gives the casting team a clear view of your face and posture from different angles. Keep your movements smooth and professional, and try to maintain good posture. Not stiff, just natural.

If they ask for a full-body shot, step back far enough so the camera can capture your entire frame. You might be asked to turn in a full circle to show your overall look

 4. Speak Clearly and Naturally
When slating, it’s important to speak clearly and at a natural pace. You don’t want to rush through your introduction or sound robotic. Instead, imagine you’re introducing yourself in a friendly yet professional setting. Smile, be authentic, and let your personality shine through. Be Your authentic self not what you think they want to see or hear,

 5. What Do I WearR? Dress Appropriately**
While slating, your appearance should be clean, simple, and professional. Wear clothing that fits well and highlights your figure without being distracting. Neutral colors work best, as they don’t take attention away from you. I say wear all Black, something fitted with no logos  Avoid busy patterns or overly bold accessories, as these can be distracting on camera. Women wear heels if you like, and men dress shoes. Also, keep makeup and hairstyles natural to show casting directors your true look.

 6.  The Key to This is…..Practice, Practice, Practice
The more comfortable you are with your slate, the more confident you’ll appear on camera. Practice in front of a mirror or record yourself slating a few times to see how you come across. You can also get a friend to come over and help. This will help you get comfortable with the process and ensure you know exactly what to say when it’s time for the real thing.

 7. No One Can Do You Like You! Be Authentic.
Remember, casting directors are looking for more than just looks—they want to see your personality. Don’t be afraid to let your unique self come through in your slate. Whether you have a warm smile, a calm energy, or an upbeat vibe, let that shine in your introduction. When you bring who you are it’s easy. It’s when you try to give what you think they want, or who you think they want to see is when you falter. Being authentic makes you memorable. So Let the truth shine through.

In Conclusion
Slating may seem like a small part of the audition process, but it’s a crucial moment to make a strong first impression. By presenting yourself confidently, clearly, and naturally, you show casting directors and model consultants that you’re professional and ready for the next step. With practice and preparation, slating will become second nature, allowing you to focus on the rest of your audition with ease. The key is no one will bring what or who you are to this opportunity so step right up as your authentic self and watch the doors open up!
