My Top 5 Things A Casting Director
Looks For In A New Model
If you are a new model embarking on this journey of becoming a model, stepping into a casting room feels a little or a lot intimidating as well as exhilarating. The idea of impressing a casting director, standing out from the crow and landing the job can shatter someone’s nerves. Casting directors may seem like they have all the power, but knowing what they are looking for just might give you the upper hand. So let’s go through a few things to get that gig.(Wink*)
1. Confidence & Presence.
First thing In the land of modeling confidence is key to landing that job. Casting Directors are drawn to those models who carry themselves with poise and presence. When you walk into the room your energy should communicate that you are comfortable in your own skin and ready to own the space. Confidence is not arrogance but just the belief in oneself. (Practice your walk, facial expressions until they are second nature). Confidence isnt about what you wear– but how you wear you!
2. Versatility & Adaptability
The modeling industry is fast-paced and always evolving, so casting directors are always looking for models that can adapt to different moods, looks and styles. You are a chameleon! Whether you’re modeling streetwear, high fashion or a lifestyle brand, versatility is key. A model should be able to adapt to his or her surroundings, A successful model can transform & embody whatever the client may need. When you’re at a casting the director wants to see that you can easily move between different looks & styles. Whether it’s soft and commercial or edgy and editorial you want to be able to transform.
3. Professionalism and Reliability
This is one of my favorite things to discuss when it comes to the modeling industry. Professionalism is one of the most critical qualities casting directors seek in new models. Being a great model isn’t just about looking good—it’s about being reliable, punctual, and easy to work with. The last thing a casting director or client wants is a model who is difficult, flaky, or doesn’t show up on time. So what’s you take away from this: Be On Time, Be Professional & Be Prepared. You may be dropped dead gorgeous or handsome but if a bad attitude is there I say you can kiss that opportunity goodbye!
4. A Distinctive Look
While the industry has become more diverse, casting directors are always looking for the next (New Look). In the sea of new faces having a unique feature or quality that sets you apart can be the key to catching a director’s attention. Whether it’s your striking bone structure, bold freckles, an unconventional body type, or a captivating smile—embrace what makes you stand out. It’s not about conventional beauty anymore, that tattoo, those piercings, that vitiligo is not a deterrent but something that will get you noticed & booked.
5. Ability To Take Direction
This is key to any new model making it and making it big in this career. Casting directors will want to work with models who are able to take great directions. I say what models do all day is take directions. Whether you’re on a shoot or in a fashion show there will always be a creative directive to follow. A model who is open to critique and can adapt quickly to a photographer’s or director’s suggestions is invaluable. Casting directors want to see that you’re coachable, easy to work with, and willing to collaborate with the creative team to bring their vision to life. The better you are at taking direction, the more likely they are to remember you.
In conclusion, what I would like for you to take away from all of this is: No one can do you, so be your authentic self, professional, energetic and ready to shine!
