What is Prêt-à-porter?

Prêt-à-porter clothing, also known as “ready to wear”, emerged in the 1950s. The name was created by the designer Pierre Cardin with the intention of popularizing fashion and that garments could reach a broader audience.

Contrary to haute couture clothing, which is tailored and more exclusive, ready-to-wear is mass-produced, on a massive scale, and in sizes ranging from extra small to extra large to simplify production and reduce costs.

However, the fact that it is more affordable doesn’t mean that it is low quality. In fact, prêt-à-porter has among its most prestigious brands names such as Chanel, Prada and Gucci, among many others.

Did you know this expression from the world of fashion?
